CUESA Sunday Supper: A Farm to City Feast and celebration of the local food community

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure to attending the reception for CUESA’s 15th annual Sunday Supper: A Farm to City Feast, a gala held to celebrate the Bay Area’s vibrant food community. CUESA is dedicated to cultivating a sustainable food system through its farmers markets (Ferry Plaza in SF and Jack London Square in Oakland) and educational programs designed to educate and inspire healthy eating among kids and adults alike. The gala funds more than half of the cost of CUESA’s education programs like Schoolyard to Market and Foodwise Kids that serve more than 3,000 Bay Area youth each year. Several high school students from Schoolyard to Market were present with hors d’oeuvres made with produce from the community garden.

This year, the gala raised more than $300,000 for its mission as well as $23,500 from the live auction to support the Redwood Empire Food Bank‘s North Bay fire relief efforts.

These find gentlemen were shucking oysters for an hour and a half — I made sure to get my fill of oysters with a dash of bloody mary mix.

Pan de aceite, butternut squash marmalade bellota ham by The Commissary
Golden beet “borscht” by Trestle

I couldn’t get over these hand-made kale and carrot chips made by Whole Foods San Francisco just for the reception! I wish I could get my hands on a couple bagfuls of them!

Dahi puri – wheat shell, cilantro-basil yogurt mousse, tamarind chutney by August (1) Five
Eggplant caponata, crescenza, grilled sourdough toast, mint, basil by Dirty Habit

While waiting for some of these amazing savory maple gougeres by The Alembic, I hopped over to the next table to watch the bartenders make some sophisticated cocktails:

Khao yum – turmeric rice salad with sour fruits, crunchy vegetables & pungent herbs by Kin Khao

Thank you CUESA for a beautiful and fun night!

**The cover photo is a photo (property of CUESA) of the gala from last year. The supper is held on the upper level of the Ferry Building with a beautifully-lit arching roof. I caught a glimpse of the area as I was leaving the venue. Maybe some day I’ll have the means to attend the full supper!
