Kewpie Truck San Francisco Tour

Have you seen the Kewpie Taste Truck?

I caught up with the truck at the San Francisco Zoo where ambassadors were handing out free samples of dishes showcasing the iconic Kewpie Japanese mayonnaise and Deep Roasted Sesame dressing.

If you’re Asian, chances are you know Kewpie mayo well. The bottle design was simple: a clear squeezable bottle that revealed the yellowish white mayo with red text and design. The design was simple, but easily recognizable in the store. My brother was infatuated with the mayo when we were growing up for its umami taste, so we always had a bottle in the fridge for his sandwiches.

The dishes that were being served at the truck:
Grilled Deep Roasted Sesame Chicken Skewers
Deep-Roasted Sesame Salad
Kewpie Egg Salad Toast
Kewpie Elote

It was a nice and sunny afternoon in San Francisco and the zoo entrance was bustling with families entering and exiting the park. Kewpie ambassadors dressed in red caught parents’ attention as they walked by with their children in tow. Many were happy to stop to grab a dish or two to share with their children; they were handed samples of the Deep Roasted Sesame dressing to take home as well. While I grew up in the Bay Area with Kewpie’s mayo, I didn’t know they also sold dressings — a quick look on the Kewpie website reveals several other flavors. While growing up, we were only able to find Kewpie mayo in Asian grocery stores, but now they’ve expanded their distribution to several grocery chains and Costco!

My two favorite dishes of the four were the Deep Roasted Sesame Salad and Kewpie Elote. I did like the idea of using the dressing as a marinade (used on the chicken skewers), but I enjoy a nice salad and liked the taste of the roasted sesame dressing. I’ll have to pick up a bottle to spruce up my salads. The second was the elote — why haven’t I thought of making elote myself at home before? I would probably use a can of corn to make the dish instead of grilling ears of it; it’s quick and easy!
